The bones behind the garment

It’s A Wrap!

April 18, 2022

Where to start:

Upon planning the start of my Spring/Summer wardrobe, I have images that I pinned with many looks that inspired me with my own ideas or ideas I wanted to recreate. I had to begin somewhere, but where to start?

It all started with a skirt my son’s girlfriend, Grace, wanted to make. A cute pleated skirt with a wrap front that instead of ties had two sets of buckles. Several things that I had pinned, that also had a wrap, came to mind. Thus creating the ‘It’s a wrap’ collection.

The one thing I like about wrap skirts or dresses is that they truly never go out of style. My mom made me a wrap skirt in grade school, and I went on to make a few in the early ’90s and 2000s. I think once the kid’s entered the picture my skirt/dress wearing stopped. Now that they are older I would like to start again.

Where is the trend?

While it is true that wrap skirts, or anything else for that matter, were not listed anywhere that I saw on everyone’s trend radar. Other trends could easily be incorporated into these looks. Trends that I plan to incorporate are:

  1. Peats
  2. Color – Yellow
  3. Metallic

For some of the other garments, I don’t plan to incorporate any trends, I plan to make them because I like the pattern and fabric.

Patterns:

The latest BurdaStyle Magazines provided me with some great options. The others came from an older issue of Burda, an old McCalls pattern that I made back in the early 90s, and a self-drafted pattern.

  1. Pleated Mini – self-drafted pattern
  2. BurdaStyle 03/2022 #105/6 – wrap dress
  3. BurdaStyle 02/2022 #105 – wrap skirt with flounce
  4. BurdaStyle 07/2021 #128 – wrap skirt no flounce
  5. McCalls 4309 NY NY Collection – front wrap button back top

Fabric:

I have quite the fabric collection going and was lucky to find some to use. However, I didn’t have enough yardage in the right type of fabric for the wrap skirt with flounce and the wrap dress.  I found some amazing fabric online at Mood fabrics for the skirt and as of right now I am still looking for fabric for the dress. Luckily I have enough to get me going, if I find something beforehand I will make it, if not I will make it another time.

Final Thought:

Being in North Carolina I have many months of warmer weather. I look forward to adding summer wear to my wardrobe, which is sorely lacking. Even though I am just starting my first collection of the Spring and Summer months, my mind is always wandering ahead of what I am doing. I have already envisioned many ideas that I cannot wait to share. Hopefully, I will be posting my finished garments soon!
